Uutta Avoimessa: Jean Sibelius and other Finnish composers

Vuosi 2015 on Sibelius-juhlavuosi: säveltäjämestarin syntymästä tulee 150 vuotta.

Englanninkielinen Jean Sibelius and other Finnish composers (5 cr) -opintojakso järjestetään yhteisopetuksena Helsingin yliopiston Musiikkitieteen oppiaineen kanssa. Professori Eero Tarastin luennot ovat keskiviikkoisin 14.1.–29.4.2015.

Opintojakson suoritustapana ovat luennot ja luentopäiväkirja/essee. Kirjallisen tehtävän voi tehdä myös suomeksi tai ruotsiksi.

Jean Sibelius and other Finnish composers -lectures deal with the greatest Finnish composer Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) in his festival year of 150th anniversary. The series introduces participants to his life and work but also to his larger cultural context and to those composers which were before him and those who came after and lived more or less in the 'shadow' of the master.

Sibelius' output is analyzed in some of his most representative works from Kullervo and Finlandia to Fourth and Fifth symphonies, using methods of aesthetic observation, semiotic inquiry and postcolonial studies. A lot of auditive and visual illustrations are used.

So the series opens with a short general history of music in Finland, introducing composers like Fredrik Pacius, Karl Collan and Robert Kajanus. The post-Sibelian composers include a.o. Helvi Leiviskä (lectures by Eila Tarasti), Carl Hirn and Einojuhani Rautavaara.

The lecture series starts January 14th 2015.
